Before making a single cut on our raw lumber pile, we let the white oak board sit flat in the workshop for fourteen days. Ambient humidity in a small shop fluctuates wildly, and wood moves as it settles into a new environment. Rushing straight from the lumber yard to the jointer guarantees warped tops three months down the road.

Acclimation and Moisture Testing

We used a pinless moisture meter to take surface and core readings across six different points on each plank. Our target baseline for interior furniture in this region is seven to eight percent moisture content. Jumping the gun on damp timber leads to joint failure and split panels once winter heating kicks in.

Flattening Without Sacrificing Thickness

When flattening rough oak on a six-inch jointer, resistance is your main enemy. We set our depth of cut to a shallow one-sixteenth of an inch to prevent tear-out along cathedral grain lines. Reading the grain orientation before each pass keeps the face smooth and preserves precious material thickness.

Final Dimensioning and Grain Selection

Once two faces were square and flat, we laid out the planks on the assembly table to plan the top panel. Alternating the orientation of end-grain growth rings balances internal stress across the table width. This extra twenty minutes of layout prevents long-term cupping across the finished surface.
